New Doc Next Theme: Interactive Storytelling.

Introducing a new Doc Next Network featured Theme for December and January: INTERACTIVE STORYTELLING.

At a time when interactivity is redefining the documentary landscape, Doc Next Network, as a movement committed to reimagining the notion of “documentary”, tackles the link between digital interactive technologies and documentary making by zooming in on interactive storytelling practices.

Promoting documentary as tool for communication as well as documentation, and forming a link between traditional media and the constantly developing world of free culture, Doc Next Network investigates interactive storytelling as a new model of exchange between young creators, providing them an alternative space to be inter-active, inter-participatory, and inter-dependent. 

Essentially, the interactive multimedia capability of the Internet provides documentarians with a unique medium to create non-linear and multi-linear forms of narrative that combine photography, text, audio, video, animation and infographics. Beyond that, with the development of new authoring tools, with HTML5 and open video possibilities, media makers are getting enabled to create a wider range of experiences and personal ways for the networked audience to tap into the narrative sphere of a documentary, giving them an active role in the negotiation of ‘reality’.

With the Do-it-with-Others (DiwO) approach deeply ingrained in our network, we believe these practices help the new generation of media makers create meaningful, socially engaged stories in a participatory framework by introducing new ways of interaction, conversation and sharing of ideas between and among their different communities, allowing them to compare the realities of different worlds and ultimately to present in novice ways alternative perspectives on contemporary Europe and beyond.

Social justice through free culture and expanded (media) education.” This is what we seek to promote and accomplish through our work as Doc Next Network. We welcome, investigate and help construct new approaches, methods and tools of storytelling to do just that.

The theme of Interactive Storytelling will run until mid January 2013.

Doc Next Network develops method for involving immigrant media-makers.

Doc Next Network initiated a training course “Working with Immigrant Media-makers” in London, taking place on September 12, 13 and 14. The goal of this cross-sectorial training is to develop shared methodologies to involve young D-I-Y creative media-makers with (im)migrant backgrounds in the creation of new remixed media works. The training is part of the ‘Remapping Europe – A Remix’ project.

‘Remapping Europe – a Remix’ is an investigative artistic project that aims to contribute to an inclusive cultural practice and public imagery in and of Europe by connecting young creative media-makers who have (im)migrant perspectives from Spain, Poland, Turkey, and the UK to wider European intergenerational audiences.

The project’s activities stem from one underlying principle: re-mixing of media as a method to re- view, re-investigate and re-consider prevailing imagery of (im)migrants in European societies and to ultimately, ‘re-map’ Europe visually, geographically and mentally.

The activities include transnational, cross-sectorial learning platforms, investigating the immigrant’s perspective in the public debate and imagery; creative remix ateliers in Spain, Poland, Turkey, and the UK, involving 48 young digital storytellers with (im)migrant backgrounds and perspectives; international showcases of their remix works at significant cultural festivals in each of these countries and in an on- line media collection; major remix-performance and installation in Amsterdam and Seville, with a wider participatory, digital component involving European citizens across the continent and a research publication and catalogue documenting the processes and outcomes of the project.

The Goal of this cross-sectorial training is to develop shared methodologies to involve young DIY creative media-makers with (im)migrant backgrounds in the creation of new remixed media works. Cultural experts of the partner organisations (The Doc Next Network ‘hubs’) will bring a community worker of a local immigrant organisation from their country to present and discuss practices on how to reach and include young immigrants in their creative media making ateliers.

What are the challenges and opportunities that can be used for a shared methodology to reach ‘hard-to- get’ target groups? The training is a stepping stone for the inclusion of young immigrants in the remix ateliers.

  • To develop a ‘target group’ to understand who it is we aim to work with;
  • To develop a recruitment methodology for finding participants;
  • To understand existing methods of practice when working with young (im)migrants;
  • To gain an understanding of the tools at our disposal for the Remix Ateliers;
  • To develop local and joint Remix Atelier methodologies;
  • To create a common language with mutual understandings and agreements;
  • To understand how we can avoid stereotyping and pre-assumptions that may hinder the project.

More than four hours a day on the internet

Young people are attached to their mobile phones… But do they still use landlines? Is online television as popular as ‘regular’ television? What is the most popular games console among today’s young people across Europe? And what are the biggest differences between European countries in terms of how they use media today?

The answers to these questions – and more – can be found in the first European-wide Youth Media Trend Report (2011-2011), which was commissioned by the Youth & Media Programme of the European Cultural Foundation (ECF).

The extensive research was carried out by the Belgian research centre Trendwolves, which looked at media use among young people aged between 15 and 25 in five European countries: Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and Croatia.

Researchers mapped how young people use media in each of these five countries, focusing specifically on social networks, internet, telephone, television, radio, newspapers, magazines and games.

The first Youth Media Trend Report of its kind identifies different media landscapes across Europe and represents an important step in measuring, observing and revealing changes in the way young people use their media.

With this research, ECF aims to provide broad access to exclusive data to cultural, political and media organisations and professionals working on youth and media policies and programmes. The research is designed to fill a gap for the cultural sector, which is often deprived from mere facts and figures, unlike the business sector, in which such research data are used for designing successful marketing strategies and forecasting trends.

Looking forward to Poland.doc 2

This year, the Association “e” is creating an alternative production studio, Young Creators CO-OP, in which we hope to provide good conditions for development for young creators. The studio will operate on the rule „from idea to realisation”, meaning that we want to see the project through all the way to post-production.

At “e”, we organise workshops, exhibitions, open screenings, portfolio reviews, we produce debut films and photographic projects (Poland.doc, Film Preschool, Photopresentations, Snapshots). In thinking about the modern media education professionalisation of cultural workers is vital for us, along with investing in young artists who can combine their artistic potential with a sense of social mission and share their skills with younger generations.

Along these theme, in 2011 we organised five multimedia workshops for young people with little experience in film and/or photography during the summer holidays. The theme of explorations in film and photographic workshops was “Local Hero”. In line with our plans a total of 5 short documentary forms were created: three photographic projects (photocasts) and two short film etudes. On the last day of the workshop during an official showcase each group presented its short documentary to a wide audience. The screenings attracted a lot of interest. In one of the towns where we held workshops, Kołbacz, almost entire town was present at the premiere (the film has been shown 4 times since).

We promote young documentary work in Poland and abroad. In 2012 we would like to continue our activities in this field with the almost entire town was presentecond edtion of Poland.doc, within the Doc Next Network.

Poland.doc Inspirations available in English

Inspirations is a series of articles, interviews and videos written with young creators and culture animateurs in mind.

The series opens with a documentary series How to make a film, created by Polish documentary maker Piotr Stasik for the public television channel Kultura. Texts range from general reflections on being creative (To be creative by cultural animateur at the Center for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, Maria Parczewska) to practical advice (Photography in work with children by Association “ę”’s own Agnieszka Pajączkowska).

With something to liven up the minds of every one interested in film, photography or more broadly creative work, Inspirations invite the reader to challenge themselves – to be inspired.

IDFA, here we come!

Two young DIY media-makers from Turkey, Akile Nazli Kaya (31) and Selin Gunduz (21), are ready to participate IDFA 2011 next week as part of the Doc Next filmmakers group that will take part in the IDFAcademy and all related events. Nazli’s film “Ebb and Tide” is among the ten short Doc Next documentaries that will be screened at IDFA 2011 prior to the feature length films. Two other films from Turkey, “Ece’esque” (dir. Ozge Yesilcimen, Bora Balbey, Bade Selcuk, Caner Kececi) and “Dear Brother Sakir” (dir. Bahar Demirkan, Okyar Igli, Hayati Kose and Morteza Moghaddam), which were made during Youth MODE Workshops, will be screened at IDFA’s Doc Next Mini Cinema section featuring continual screenings of a selection from the Doc Next Media Collection.


Nazli is an awarded animator/director/designer working and studying in Prague. Nazli’s productions focus on important themes such as immigration, food security and personal freedom. Her biggest ambition in life is to make creative, innovative and inspiring short animated films and documentaries that address social and environmental issues. Her dream is to open an animation studio in Prague and Istanbul that will create socially and environmentally concerned ‘green’ films.” Her film in IDFA 2011 program “Ebb and Tide” is about a young woman reading from her diaries about her life in the Czech Republic while showing the life of her parents, who also temporarily immigrated to another country. As an interpretation of home videos made on S8, the film’s emotionally charged story challenges the existing imagery of Turkish people living in Europe. Nazli’s awarded animation documenaries “Zlin Soup” and “Nazli in Zlin” are also in the Doc Next Media Collection. She is currently working on a new ‘green’ film “The Seed”.


Selin is an aspiring DIY filmmaker with tremendous self-motivation. She did not attend university nor did she receive formal media education, but she pushes herself to learn more about filmmaking, screenwriting, photography and acting by attending certificate programs, workshops and seminars. Selin participated the Youth MODE Documentary Workshop in Canakkale last year and made the film “Sounds and Shadows“, also included in the Doc Next Media Collection,
with fellow workshop participants Erkan Atay, Ahmet Turan and Alper Dutkin. “To me, filmmaking is not a temporary interest. It has captured me completely. I want to build my life on it, I am saving money by working other jobs in order to make films and also to attend screenings and other film related events,” says Selin, who now works on the script for her new short film and is preparing a documentary on internet censorship in Turkey.

We wish both ladies the best of time at IDFAcademy and we are also very excited to be joining them in Amsterdam next week!

Doc Next @ Documentarist 2011

With the initiative of MODE Istanbul, a 50-minute long short documentary film selection from the  Doc Next Network media collection, including films completed at Youth MODE Media Workshops, will be screened at Documentarist 2011 Istanbul Documentary Days on Thursday June 2nd, 2011, at 18:00 in Sismanoglio Megaro venue in Beyoglu, Istanbul. Following the screening, a talk will be held with the participating young media-makers, instructors and MODE Istanbul representative about their past and current projects.

13 Festival Internacional ZEMOS98

Dicen que no hay tiempo que perder. Lo dicen las noticias y los fanzines, las canciones de siempre y las películas en versión original del cine al que vamos de vez en cuando. Se cuela por las rendijas subliminales de la publicidad, por las caras B y por la letra pequeña. Vivimos al día: hiperconectados, hipermotivados, hiperenlazados. Seguimos viajando de átomos a bits a la velocidad de la luz. La cultura converge y se vuelve transmediática e híbrida. Educación, comunicación, arte, ciencia y tecnología copulan amigablemente. Somos expertos de nada y amateursde todo. En este punto nos hemos quedado pensando, muy quietos, tratando de saber qué es lo que se pierde cuando el tiempo se va.

¿Es el overbooking cultural un nuevo problema de las ciudades contemporáneas? ¿Estamos reflexionando o estamos generando artificios reflexivos? ¿Debe el pensamiento crítico hacer marketing de sí mismo? ¿Por qué nos atrae lo nuevo? ¿Qué necesidad hay de generar noticias continuamente? ¿Escribimos nuestra propia historia o generamos consumibles comunicativos? ¿Queremos llegar antes o ir más deprisa? ¿Cuesta cada vez más pensar?

En estos últimos años hemos hablado de control y videovigilancia, de televisión, de inteligencia colectiva. Hemos puesto sobre la mesa conceptos como MicrobiosEducación ExpandidaRegreso al Futuro. Nos hemos dibujado y borrado en infinidad de ocasiones sin temor a salirnos de la línea. Nos hemos hecho preguntas y las hemos respondido. Hemos buscado respuestas y no las hemos encontrado. Nos seguimos haciendo preguntas.

Un festival tras otro, hemos sentido la responsabilidad de proponer un tema que abriera un nuevo surco de reflexión, que ayudara a definir un poco más el camino por el que transitan nuestros anhelos e intuiciones, creyendo que, conectando cada uno de los puntos neurálgicos de ese sistema nervioso, aportaríamos algo a este ecosistema cultural en el que nos movemos. Esta vez no, no queremos recurrir a la urgencia de lo nuevo, no queremos generar un trending topic o una keyword de moda. Lo que queremos es tomarnos el tiempo necesario para seguir pensando sobre aquello que consideramos define y redefine el contexto cultural de quienes entrelazamos espacios analógicos y digitales.

Queremos hacer un alto en el camino para reforzar la idea de que, aún siendo pequeños microbios, formamos parte de una masa multiforme que vive en la sociedad red, generando dinámicas de lo micro que abren espacios para la cultura libre y el procomún. El Festival Internacional ZEMOS98 funciona como hub cultural, por eso somos mediadores tecnológicos y por eso experimentamos con contenidos y formatos. En 2011, el año de la crisis incesante, nuestros intereses siguen su curso mientras mantenemos el anclaje en tres líneas de investigación:

  • Educación expandida: porque aprendemos en cualquier momento y en cualquier lugar; porque para nosotros en la genealogía de festival encontramos un laboratorio educativo.
  • Audiovisual integrado: porque vivimos inmersos en una cultura audiovisual cuyos sistemas de representación y narración están mutando gracias a conceptos como interfaz, hipervínculo, código embed, etc.
  • Comunicación en Beta: porque no hay comunicación sin educación y viceversa, porque la red nos exige conversar, multiplicar nuestra identidad, ser honestos y transparentes.

Por todo lo anterior, señoras y señores periodistas, afiliados a festivales y público en general…lo sentimos: DESAPARECE EL FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL ZEMOS98.

Es broma.

En realidad simplemente no tenemos tema nuevo. O sí.
